Are you ready for your next adventure on two wheels? If so, then you are faced with an important decision: which bike should accompany you on your journey? Nowadays, many different providers offer a wide range of different types of bikes. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, which I would like to share with you to help you make your decision.
The racing bike
Advantages:
Speed: Road bikes are known for their speed on paved roads. If you want to cover long distances in a short period of time, a road bike is a good choice.
Lightweight: Thanks to the light frame and thin tires, road bikes are ideal for long rides where every gram counts.
Aerodynamics: The aerodynamic shape of a road bike allows you to reach higher speeds with less effort.
Disadvantages:
Limited off-road capability: Road bikes are designed for use on paved roads and are less suitable for rough, unpaved trails that are often encountered in bikepacking.
Lower load capacity: Due to their design, road bikes are typically not designed to carry heavy loads, which can limit their use for longer bikepacking trips.
Gravel bike
Advantages:
Versatility: Gravel bikes are designed to work well on both asphalt and dirt roads, offering the perfect balance between speed and off-road capability.
Robustness: The durable frames and wider tires make gravel bikes a robust choice for demanding bikepacking tours.
Rack attachment: Many gravel bikes are equipped with attachment points for racks and bags, making them ideal for carrying gear on longer tours.
Disadvantages:
Not as fast as road bikes: Although gravel bikes work well on different surfaces, they usually don't reach the same speed as road bikes on paved roads.
Weight: Gravel bikes can be a bit heavier than road bikes due to their more robust construction, which can be noticeable on longer rides.
Mountain bike
Off-road capability: Mountain bikes are designed for rough and challenging trails and therefore offer excellent performance on difficult terrain.
Stability: The wide tires and robust construction of a mountain bike ensure stability and control, even on rough surfaces.
Load capacity: Mountain bikes can usually carry heavier loads than road bikes or gravel bikes, making them a good choice for bikepacking.
Disadvantages:
Slow on the road: Because of their heavier construction and profiled tires, mountain bikes are not as fast as racing bikes or gravel bikes on paved roads.
Less comfortable on long rides: The more upright riding style and suspension of a mountain bike can be less comfortable on longer rides than other types of bikes.
Touring bike / trekking bike
Advantages:
Comfort: Touring bikes are designed for long rides and therefore often offer a comfortable seating position and suspension that absorbs shocks on uneven roads.
Load capacity: Touring bikes are designed to carry heavy loads and often have special attachment points for luggage racks and bags.
Reliability: The robust construction and durable components make touring bikes a reliable choice for extended bikepacking tours.
Disadvantages:
Weight: Touring bikes can be slightly heavier than other types of bikes due to their heavier construction and additional features.
Slow on asphalt: Due to their design and wider tires, touring bikes are usually not as fast as road bikes or gravel bikes on asphalt roads.
Ultimately, choosing the right bike for your bikepacking adventure depends on your individual preferences, riding style and planned routes. No matter which bike you choose, the most important thing is that you have fun and enjoy nature while exploring the world on two wheels.
