Bicycle tour through the Altes Land

Bicycle tour old country

Are you looking for a relaxing break from the hustle and bustle of the city – with fresh air, vast landscapes, idyllic orchards and a little bit of adventure? Then hop on your bike and join us on a tour through Old Country! From our bike rental in Schultzweg 7 In less than an hour, you'll be in the heart of one of Northern Germany's most beautiful regions. Here, we'll show you the way there, give you a few insider tips for the journey—and, of course, tell you how to get back.

Ready to go? From Hamburg city center heading south

Your journey begins right here at Happy Bikes. Once you're on your bike, you'll head off along quiet back roads and well-developed cycle paths towards ElbeYou roll comfortably through the Veddel, past old industrial plants, graffiti art and canals – an exciting contrast to the natural experience that awaits you later.

Tip: Use the Cycle path along the Norderelbe, which offers you a great view of the harbor after Finkenwerder The route is about 12 kilometers long, flat, and pleasant to ride – ideal for arriving and unwinding.

Short break, big panorama: Across the water by ferry 🛳️

In Finkenwerder Once you arrive, you have two options: You can use the HVV ferry line 62 after Devil's Bridge Translate – Taking your bike with you is permitted and costs nothing extra if you have a public transport ticket. The ride is short but wonderful: views of the Elbe, the cries of seagulls, and a touch of vacation feeling.

Or you can stay on your bike and take the route via Altenwerder and the Southern Elbe, if you prefer to stay completely on the saddle. Both routes lead you directly into the green paradise: the Old Country.

Welcome to the Altes Land – Northern Germany's orchard 🍐🍒

The Old Country is more than just a rural area south of the Elbe – it is a true cultural heritage. For centuries, apples, cherries, pears and plums have been growing here – on over 10,000 hectares of orchards! Especially for Flowering time in spring the region is an absolute dream: white and pink flowers as far as the eye can see.

But also in Summer and autumn is worth a visit. You can buy fresh fruit from small farm shops right along the roadside – or stop by one of the many cafés. Our favorites:

  • Café Obsthof Lefers (Jork): Homemade apple pie with cream – it doesn't get any better than that.
  • Altes Land Café (Mittelnkirchen): Smaller but very charming with a view of the water.
  • Farm shop Herzapfelhof Lühs: Here you'll find everything to do with apples – and a really nice place to take a break.

The most beautiful places and routes

Once you're in the Altes Land region, you can continue on as you please. Here are a few highlights for your tour:

  • Estebrügge: Romantic little town with an old drawbridge and historic half-timbered houses.
  • York: The “center” of the Altes Land with museums, cafés and information centers on fruit culture.
  • Borstel & Neuenfelde: Ideal if you like it quiet and natural – with many small paths directly along the orchards.
  • The Lühedeich: A particularly beautiful route takes you along the Lühe, a small river with locks, bridges and great photo spots.

And how do you get back?

You can of course return the same way – or choose an alternative route, for example via Cranz, then over Neuenfelde back to Finkenwerder. Or you can drive to the S-Bahn Neugraben and let the train take you back to Hamburg if your legs start to get tired.

A few more tips for your tour:

  • Don't forget water and snacks – especially in summer it can get hot.
  • Pack sunscreen, even if it's still cloudy in the morning.
  • Charge your phoneif you want to look at Google Maps or take some nice photos while you're on the go.
  • Don't forget your bike helmet – Safety first!

Whether as a half-day trip or a leisurely day tour – the Altes Land is perfect for simply getting out, taking a deep breath and getting to know Hamburg from a completely different perspective.
